This year was my seventh year photographing the IDEA World Convention. This is the first time the convention was held in Las Vegas in 10 years. It is always a great convention to photograph because of all the energy and activity that the 10,000 participants bring to the event. The best fitness professionals in the world are at this convention, such as Tony Horton, Todd Durkin, Bennie Wylie, and Cassie Ho.
I believe this is the seventh year that I have photographed the IDEA Personal Trainer Institute that is held every year in the Washington, DC area.
Personal trainers, fitness professionals, owners and managers: learn what it takes to truly take their business and training skills to new heights. IDEA Personal Trainer Institute is where industry leaders show how they secure client and business success. From fitness assessment and program design to social media marketing and staff management.
This year it was held at the Marriott Conference Center in Bethesda, MD. It was nice to photograph the event in a new facility.
We setup a small studio in one of the hotel conference rooms every year to produce images that we hope will end up on the cover of next year's brochure and also to to be used for other marketing purposes. Most of the time during the two days that I am photographing the event I am in live sessions capturing the action as it happens.
This year's IDEA personal Trainer Institute was held in February at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, VA. This was the fifth year that I have photographed the conference and it never gets old. It never fails to amaze me how I go into these poorly lit, vanilla hotel conference rooms and see activities and exercises that I have never seen before. The teachers/instructors do a great job of bringing new ideas (no pun intended) every year to help the trainers keep their programs for their clients interesting and fun.
You can see below the cover for this year's brochure. The photograph of the young man in the blue shirt was taken by me at last year's conference.
One of my favorite photographs that I took was of a tall muscular man holding a "Surge." In the original photograph was a plain hotel conference room background, and lifted him out of that photograph and put him in a park in New York City.

I had the pleasure to photograph the IDEA World Fitness Convention in Anaheim, CA this past August. This is the fourth World Fitness Convention that I have photographed for IDEA, and the eighth event overall. IDEA holds a smaller event in the Washington, DC area every year in February and I photograph that as well.
The IDEA World Fitness Convention is the premier fitness conference that features a diverse educational programming from world-renowned presenters. There was over 330 sessions in personal training, sports conditioning, group training, nutrition, business, and marketing.
Some of this year's guest speakers included world record-setting swimmer Diana Nyad, Jillian Michaels (formally on NBC's The Biggest Loser), Tara Stiles, the founder and owner of the Strala yoga program, and other regular presenters such as Todd Durkin, Tony Horton, and Chalene Johnson.
You can view/buy photographs from the conference by going to the IDEA World 2014 album on my website.
I had the pleasure to photograph IDEA’s 30-Year Anniversary at the 2012 IDEA World Fitness Convention in San Diego, CA. As a photographer, these events present you with some great photo opportunities.
On the first day I find myself photographing on the deck of the Midway Aircraft Carrier with a few hundred trainers running through drills. I then go back to the San Diego Convention Center to photograph Jane Fonda who was awarded the Jack LaLanne Life Time Achievement award from the IDEA Health and Fitness Association.
If you are familiar with the fitness industry the giants of the industry were there, namely Todd Durkin, Peter Twist, Kathy Smith, Tony Horton, and Chalene Johnson.

I had the pleasure of photographing the IDEA Personal Trainer Institute at the Alexandria, VA Hilton this past weekend. The event brings a limited number of personal trainers together with world-class presenters and industry experts for an intense, hands-on, interactive experience. Every session is designed to go beyond the usual workshop with an extended time length (most sessions are 2–3 hours), in-depth information, and small class size focusing on the best and latest ideas and techniques that will create more success for the trainers' training programs.
Topics included: specific training techniques to improve agility, speed and explosiveness; standardized performance assessment systems; the science behind proper recovery; improving biomechanics in golfers; nutrition for energy; and enhanced performance and tips for training triathletes.
I try to work out at the gym three times a week. I use the good old fashioned weights, machines, and ellipticals. It was interesting to see that almost all the programs do NOT involve weights or machines, they call it Body Leverage Training. This hot training area focuses on planar training, the science of suspension training, and new tools and techniques for using body weight as resistance.
I tried to pick up a few tips while photographing the various sessions. The one thing that seemed to underline the entire event / conference was the inspiration and motivation that the trainers get while attending this power packed conference. The had some well know trainers' as instructors: Todd Durkin, Sherri McMillan, Fraser Quelch, Gary Gray, and Fabio Comana.
